The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of Bangladesh Agricultural University was established in the year 1974. The department currently offers Masters and PhD degrees in Genetics and Plant Breeding and teaches several basic courses at the undergraduate level of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours). The basic courses offered at the undergraduate students include cytology, genetics, plant breeding and biotechnology & genetic engineering.
The department currently has a total of 19 academic staff members including nine professors, thee associate professors, five assistant professors and two lecturers. The professors and associate professors attained their doctoral degrees from reputed universities of USA, UK, Germany, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. The department has an experimental field of 20 acres of land for germplasm maintenance and plant breeding research of rice, wheat, maize, soybean, rapeseed and mustard, lentils, mungbean and different other crop species.
The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding has a well-equipped molecular biology laboratory, a plant biotechnology laboratory, a plant tissue culture laboratory and a plant culture room. A good number of innovative research projects aiming to understand the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of biotic and abiotic stress tolerance are currently ongoing. Research projects of the department also focus developing new crop varieties of important crop varieties of Bangladesh with concurrent national problems.
